This piece shows a great variety of the ancient pawehe
patterns (geometric designs). The four central squares are representative
of Hawaiian life: the mo'i
(chief) with his soldiers, Kanaka Maoli (full-blooded Hawaiian man)
carrying
his fishing catch the traditional way, a single na
koa (warrior) and the offering of a ho'okupu
( a spiritual ceremonial gift). Across the bottom are the footprints
of the ancestors.
