Koa is recognized as one of the world's most beautiful
woods. Koa (acacia koa) is endemic to Hawai'i. This particular
species is found only in the Hawaiian Islands. In the rainforests, where
they thrive, they can reach heights of 80 feet and prefer to grow in
elevations of 600 to 5,000 feet. The Hawaiians used this wood for their
canoes, calabash bowls and surfboards. In more recent times it is used
for ukuleles, guitars, furniture, sculpture, vases, bowls and jewelry.
The color varies from off white, yellowish, reddish brown to dark brown
and the texture is described as simple, curly or birdseye. Every koa
piece is unique. Koa also means bravery or courage and the term is used
for a Hawaiian warrior. A small koa ki'i (tiki) was sometimes added
to the hula alter as an offering to Laka, goddess of hula. This would
inspire the hula dancers to be fearless.
The
inlay in Island Time koa is paua shell. Paua shell is an abalone type
of mollusk from New Zealand. The paua fisheries are managed with a quota
system in order to ensure there is no over-fishing of this natural resource.
Paua divers free-dive to pry the mollusk from the rocks and the meat
is considered a delicacy. Island Time paua has a unique tinting process
done to very thin sheets of shell to achieve the variety of colors.
